Dear AWC Family,
Happy Samil Day. On March 1 every year, Korean people celebrate the March 1st Movement Day, known in Korea as 삼일절 (Samiljeol). The name 삼일절 (samiljeol) can be broken into three parts:
삼 (sam) = 3
일 (il) = day / 1
절 (jeol) = festival day (word suffix)
The direct translation is “3-1 Festival Day.” This celebration reminds Koreans what happened during the public resistance on March 1, 1919, when 33 Korean Movement core activists read the Korean Declaration of Independence. Their goal was to put an end to the Japanese occupation in Korea. At present, we are able to experience freedom and democracy thanks to the 1919 movement.
Another important date this month is March 8: International Women's Day. Korea University Business School in collaboration with AWC will host an International Women's Forum: BE THE CHANGE — EMPOWERMENT, MENTORSHIP and INCLUSIVITY, featuring three speakers:
-
H.E. Hyoeun Jenny Kim (Ambassador and Deputy Minister for Climate Change, Republic of Korea)
-
Kumjoo Huh (G20 Empower Alliance)
-
Shampa Bari (Ecosystem Partnerships LG-Ericsson)
This event underscores and follows our AWC Gala theme of "BE THE CHANGE.” AWC's message of the importance of COMMUNITY, CONNECTIVITY and COLLABORATION to make a difference and serve others is in alignment with our International Women's Day theme of EMPOWERMENT, MENTORSHIP and INCLUSIVITY.
The March 8 event will draw together nearly 100 diverse AWC members, community members and Korea University Global MBA students for a day of UNITY, SOLIDARITY and ALLY-BUILDING over a network mentor lunch and forum. After the panel presentation, roundtable discussions moderated by community leaders will give participants a chance to share information, create connections and exchange ideas.
AWC Korea’s March calendar is filled with nine diverse events where we hope you’ll take the opportunity to CONNECT, COLLABORATE and build COMMUNITY (see below).
Happy March, everyone,
Betty Chung
AWC Korea President
